From a very young age we use to hear that we should live the American dream, we should live at Paris, at London bla bla bla.
Nobody ever talks about the magic hidden in Athens. The city of democracy and light. Our ancestors built todays' laws, amazing buildings like Acropolis, a part of the Mediterranean culture, a huge cuisine with endless recipes, and of course the most powerful language. Those keys were enough to unlock the sciences, the hospitality, the arts, the taste and the way of living till now.
Ancient and modern, with equal measures of grunge and grace, bustling Athens is a heady mix of history and edginess. Iconic monuments mingle with first-rate museums, the historic centre is an open-air museum, yet the city’s cultural and social life takes place amid these ancient landmarks, merging past and present.
Moreover, the weather in Greece and especially in Athens is such a miracle. The winter lasts one or two months, the summer starts early and finishes late. Sometimes it rains but with low humidity and very rarely it snows. The earthquakes do not cause biblical disasters, we have neither dangerous volcanoes nor thunderstorms.
Despite our enemies, the financial crises and thr unenmployment, Greeks know the way of living. Post-Olympics Athens, is conspicuously more sophisticated and cosmopolitan than ever before. They go out at clubs, bars, lively cafes, restaurants, cinemas and theatres enjoying its downright fun. This is that encouraging and creates a pleasant atmosphere all over the city. Also, the tourism never stops. Τhis means that in particular the areas with tradition and monuments are always overcrowed.
The nights, the city calms down and the atmosphere especially the warm summer nights is so lovely. The streets have not so much traffic and you just wanna jump on the car and drive from the center ,Syntagma, to Glyfada near the sea. This city even when she is sleeping is awake. Maybe not like Istanbul or New York but there is always something to do, somewhere to go any time and day.
Nevertheless, it is a city that combines mountain, historic center and sea. You can change landscape and view easily in 30'.
The surrounding region of Attiki holds some spectacular antiquities as well – such as the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion.
I just adore this city and I dont know if life in an other one would be that interesting and easy going!
